Hawthorne police abandoned checkpoint in favor of racial profiling, about lunch time on 10-19, 2011. The officers disappeared into the US Tow compound, while the tow drivers loaded up and removed cones, signs, etc. After lunch the Culver City patrol truck and Hawthorne patrol cars and motor units pulled over minorities who drove nearby US Tow. Every car I saw stopped, except one, was towed. I witnessed many more impounds then this video shows. At times a line of 4 trucks in a row would go past the US Tow gate at once, only to unload and head back out. If it was possible to predict what vehicles could be impounded like they magically did on this day, there would be no need to have a checkpoint, they would just head out and take the cars. This operation was unlawful, as were the stops and impounds. Checkpoints are supposed to remove personal bias from individual officers, by stopping all drivers or a mathematical formula such as every other car. They appeared to be making up for the fact that all morning, cars had the chance to turn around, rather then being trapped. The next day I met a guy picking up his car, who claimed it was wrongly impounded. He said the fee was going to be waived by the police, but he still needed to pay the tow company, because it wasnt their mistake. He missed work the day his car was taken, as well as part of the day he was getting his vehicle back. He was getting his paperwork out of the car, to take to the PD, to get a release, then return for <b>...</b>
